The history of North Miami Early Childhood School & Day Care Center can’t be told without first touching on the history of First Church

First Church began January 16th, 1912, twenty-five people gathered to enter into a covenant with one another to found a church amid the tomato fields and scrub palm of an untamed place not even known yet as North Miami.

By December they had a building; three years later, a parsonage. In 1925 a hurricane nearly destroyed the church and it’s congregation.  As they were mending, the stock market crashed.  Later, ideological differences caused a three-way split between the Fundamentalists, Conservatives, and Liberals (does this sound familiar?) and the 30% Conservatives of the congregation left with 40% of the revenue.

Not an auspicious beginning.

Fast forward to 1975.- the congregation has moved into a new sanctuary, celebrated it’s Golden Anniversary,  built an educational wing, installed a new pipe organ, filled the pews to overflowing, and with so many children around in need of schooling, opened “North Miami Early Childhood School & Day Care Center, Inc. to serve the needs of this community. It was originally a volunteer effort, staffed by members of the congregation.  As it grew, it became obvious that we needed professional staffing and teachers.

We now have 11 teachers, 2 aides, 1 Executive Director, and 66 children from 18 Fernande_Dorcely_and_2smonths to 5-years old.  Our teachers, students and Board of Directors come in every color, and many nationalities. We have subsidized breakfast, lunch  and snacks in between, and 18 VPK students. After school is out in the spring, we open Summer Camp, averaging 55 children each week. It’s noisy (trike races) , it’s wet (Splash Day), and even educational, with a weekly field-trip.

Our Executive Director, Penny Seaberg is an amazing dynamo, thoroughlyDirector Penny Seaberg professional, knowledgeable, dedicated and cheerful.  We love her.

We keep our price affordable, and even during this recession have managed to not lay off anyone. Each room has been refurbished, as has the office.

And by the way, we are celebrating our 100th Anniversary this year.
